From Istanbul to the Eastern Mediterranean

 

Konstantiniyye Collective is a research and performance collective that takes Istanbul as one of the historical meeting points of the Eastern Mediterranean.
 

We engage with forms of musical knowledge, historical sources, and living performance traditions that have developed across the diverse cultures of the Eastern Mediterranean.
 

From ancient Greece and Byzantium to the Ottoman world and the present day, we explore musical heritages through concerts, lecture-recitals, workshops, and interdisciplinary projects.

Why Konstantiniyye ?
 

Konstantiniyye is one of the historical names of Istanbul. The name developed from Constantinopolis and travelled across languages and cultural settings over centuries.

It appeared in Arabic and Persian sources in forms such as Kustantiniyye, and later became widely used in the Ottoman world as Kostantiniyye/Konstantiniyye, including in official documents and on coins.
 

We chose the name because this history of circulation reflects the city itself: a place where languages, communities, musical traditions, and forms of knowledge have continually met, changed, and been shared.
